What is DIR Floortime?

The DIR Floortime Approach is used as an intervention for children with autism and related developmental challenges, but it can also be beneficial for other children who have difficulty with communication, emotional regulation, and social interaction.

DIR stands for, Developmental, Individual-differences, and Relationship-based.

Each component of the model plays a crucial role in understanding and promoting a child’s development progress;

Developmental: Understanding a child’s individual developmental profile and progress. It recognizes that each child has unique strengths and challenges that require personalized interventions.

Individual-Differences; The individuality of each child, recognizing that not all children with ASD or other developmental challenges will exhibit the same characteristics or respond to the same interventions.

Relationship-based; Building and fostering relationships between the child and caregivers or parents. Establishing a strong emotional connection is seen as a foundation for facilitating learning and development.

Floortime; Is one of the central components of the approach. It involves engaging with the child on their level, following their interests, and joining them in their activities, often on the floor, where the child feels most comfortable and natural.
